Sleepy Sun – Embrace

sleepy-sun-embraceI am a big time sucker for a rusty bass sound that really makes me feel good from the inside out. The six memebers of Sleepy Sun have captured that bass I love, and mixed it with just enough hippie, and just enough Led Zepplin to create a heavy-psych vibe type of album. It is a great addition to the bringing in the summer playlist, and is quickly becoming one of my new favorites.

Rating: 8.4

Although originally from Santa Cruz, Sleepy Sun has made a name for themselves in San Fransisco, a journey they sporadically blog about on their Blog Spot (http://sleepysun.blogspot.com/). They are currently touring Europe with their debut album, ending the tour with a show at the ATP Festival in New York, along with Animal Collective and The Melvins.

My favorite track on the album is the opening ‘New Age.’ With a sleepy warm up of deep bass and fluttering guitar rifts, it leads smoothly into a church of rock like him with ‘Lord,’ followed by the punch in the face “Red/Black’ that drifts you in and out of powerful bridges.

And what would any album be without a 9 minute cowbell filled ballad about ‘White Dove’.

‘Duet With the Northern Sky’ is a cute mentionable end to the album, that features two soft voices that romantically guide us through the perfect summer painting.

Embrace is a solid album, especially for a debut. It is endlessly listenable on these endless summer days, and a great way to beat the heat and enjoy the scenery around us.
